Important roadworks information
M1 southbound between junction 9 to junction 8 – resurfacing
I am writing to tell you that we plan to carry out resurfacing work on the M1 southbound between junction 9 to junction 8. Once complete, drivers will benefit from the M1 remaining in a safe and serviceable condition.
We plan to complete this work over three weeks starting Tuesday 12 May 2026.
We will work between 10pm and 5am, weather permitting.
To complete the resurfacing works, we will work overnight two weekends within the three-week period:
- Saturday 16 – Sunday 17 May 22:00 – 05:00
- Saturday 30 – Sunday 31 May 22:00 – 05:00
Closures and diversions
To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the M1 southbound between junction 9 to junction 8 and divert traffic as follows:
- Exit the M1 southbound at junction 9, at the roundabout take the first exit onto Dunstable Road (A5183).
- Continue traveling along the A5183 up until Batchwood Roundabout and take the third exit onto A4147.
- Continue along the A4147 until reaching the second roundabout (Toby Carvery Hemel Hempstead) and take the third exit onto Breakspear Way (A414).
- At the Phoenix Gateway Roundabout take the second exit and continue straight to merge you back onto the M1 southbound.
Please note emergency vehicles will have access through the works with caution.
