Hertfordshire County Council has launched a public consultation on proposals to improve safety along the A5183 between Markyate and Flamstead. This follows the successful award of funding from the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund.
The A5183 is an important corridor linking several key areas in the county, including Dunstable, Redbourn and St Albans, with onward connections via the M1 to Luton Airport and London. By reducing the risk of collisions, the project would help ease congestion, improve travel times and encourage more sustainable transport choices by making the road safer and more comfortable to walk, wheel and cycle.
The proposals include:
- The introduction of traffic signals at three junctions – Hicks Road, London Road and Chequers Hill – to make it easier and safer for road users to turn onto and exit the A5183.
- A reduction in the speed limit to 40mph along the A5183 between the M1 (Junction 9) and Central Bedfordshire border to enhance road safety. On either side of Chequers Hill junction, the speed limit would be further reduced to 30mph.
- New signal-controlled crossings at Hicks Road and London Road to improve accessibility for people walking, wheeling and cycling in the area.
- A new informal crossing over the A5183 near the Holiday Inn to improve access to the bus stops.
