Important roadworks information
M1 northbound full closure junction 8 to junction 11A – collaborative cyclical/reactive works, maintenance & response, operational roadside technology, resurfacing
I am writing to tell you that we plan to carry out collaborative cyclical/reactive works, maintenance & response activities, operational roadside technology maintenance and resurfacing on the M1 northbound between junction 8 and junction 11A. This will ensure the M1 continues to remain in a safe and serviceable condition.
We plan to complete this work overnight on Wednesday 22 April 2026. We will work between 9pm and 5am, weather permitting.
Closures and diversions
To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the M1 northbound between junction 8 and junction 11A and divert traffic as follows:
- Drivers planning to travel via the A5 should exit the M1 at junction 8
- Follow the A414 Breakspear Way westbound
- Turn left towards Leverstock Green Road
- Continue along the A4147, following Hemel Hempstead Road and over Bluehouse Hill
- Continue towards the roundabout with Redbourn Road
- Turn left onto Redbourn Road (A5183) and continue along this route
- At the next roundabout, turn right onto the B487
- Follow the B487 which leads back onto the A5183
- Continue northbound on the A5183 towards the A505 roundabout
- Continue onto Watling Street
- Exit the Watling Street roundabout onto the A5 Dunstable Northern Bypass
Please note emergency vehicles will not have access through the works.
