UPDATE: Important roadworks information
M1 southbound between junction 9 (Friars Wash Interchange) to junction 8 (Breakspeares Interchange) – resurfacing

Dear Customer

We’re continuing emergency resurfacing work on the M1 southbound between junctions 9 and 8. Once complete, drivers will benefit from the M1 remaining in a safe and serviceable condition.

We plan to complete this work over four nights starting Monday 22 June 2026. We will work overnight between 10pm and 5am, weather permitting.

Closures and diversions

To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the M1 southbound between junction 9 to junction 8 and divert traffic as follows:

  • Exit the M1 southbound at junction 9, at the roundabout take the first exit onto Dunstable Road (A5183).
  • Continue traveling along the A5183 up until Batchwood Roundabout and take the third exit onto A4147.
  • Continue along the A4147 until reaching the second roundabout (Toby Carvery Hemel Hempstead) and take the third exit onto Breakspear Way (A414).
  • At the Phoenix Gateway Roundabout take the second exit and continue straight to merge you back onto the M1 southbound.

Emergency vehicles will still be able to get through the works. Please proceed with caution.

A map of the diversion can be found below.
