The council’s Countryside Managment Service (CMS) volunteers and the Ver Valley Society have worked on improving the River Ver’s health and water flow near Riverside Way, St Albans.
Historically, the river was altered from its natural course, becoming overshaded and suffering from low water flow and bank erosion, which harmed local flora and fauna.
Recently, 15 brash berms and other structures were added, using felled trees to mimic natural flow, reduce shading, and stabilize erosion. Mats and wattles were used to trap silt and were later secured to the riverbank and seeded with native flora.
