Important roadworks information
M1 southbound junction 11a to junction 9 – roadside technology, resurfacing and maintenance works
I am writing to tell you that we plan to carry out roadside technology, resurfacing and maintenance works on the M1 southbound between junction 11a and junction 9. This will ensure the M1 continues to remain in a safe and serviceable condition.
We plan to complete this work overnight on Saturday 22 August 2026. We will work between 10pm and 5am, weather permitting.
Closures and diversions
To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the M1 southbound between junctions 11a and 9 and divert traffic as follows:
- Leave the M1 southbound at Junction 11a and take the exit onto the A5 Dunstable Northern Bypass.
- Follow the A5 Dunstable Northern Bypass south-east to the roundabout with the A505.
- Take the second exit onto the A505 towards Dunstable.
- Follow the A505 through Dunstable town centre.
- Continue onto the A5183 towards Redbourn and Junction 9.
- At the roundabout at M1 Junction 9, take the appropriate exit to rejoin the M1 southbound.
- For traffic wishing to join the M1 southbound at Junction 10:
- Follow the A505 from Dunstable towards Luton.
- Continue across Luton to M1 Junction 10.
- Join the M1 southbound at Junction 10.
Please note emergency vehicles will have access into the closure but with caution.
