Dear Customer
Important roadworks information
M1 southbound junction 9 to junction 8 – resurfacing and loop renewal works

I am writing to tell you that we plan to carry out essential surfacing and loop renewal works on the M1 southbound between junction 9 and junction 8. Once complete, drivers will benefit from a safer, smoother and better‑defined road surface.

We plan to complete this work over three nights starting Wednesday 10 June 2026. We will work between 10pm and 5am, weather permitting.

Closures and diversions
To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the M1 southbound between junction 9 and junction 8 and divert traffic as follows:

  • Drivers will leave the M1 at junction 9
  • Follow the A5183 Dunstable Road
  • At the B487 Roundabout, turn right and continue on the A5183 St Albans Road / Redbourn Road
  • Continue on Redbourn Road to the next roundabout
  • Turn right onto the A4147 Bluehouse Hill
  • Continue along Hemel Hempstead Road towards Leverstock Green Way
  • At the St Albans Road Roundabout (off Maylands Avenue), turn right onto the A414 Breakspear Way
  • Follow the A414 to rejoin the M1 southbound at junction 8
  • The diversion ends once traffic has rejoined the M1

Please note emergency vehicles will have access through the works
