Big sporting moments like the World Cup bring people together: bigger crowds, longer nights, and more social drinking.
We are taking the opportunity to remind Hertfordshire road users to Think! 0% this summer – especially during major sporting events like the World Cup – as alcohol-related casualties already tend to rise at this time of year.
This is particularly important in our rural areas, where long distances, limited public transport and higher speeds on country roads can increase the risks. After enjoying a match at a pub, beer garden or community event, it can be tempting to drive home, even if it’s only a short journey. However, narrow lanes, poor lighting, sharp bends and hidden entrances mean there is far less room for error.
With a growing range of 0% alcohol options now widely available, there’s never been a better time to plan ahead. Choosing a designated driver, sticking to alcohol-free drinks, or arranging alternative transport can make all the difference.
Even small amounts of alcohol can impair judgement, slow reaction times and reduce awareness – factors that are especially dangerous on rural roads where hazards can appear suddenly, from oncoming vehicles on single-track lanes to pedestrians, cyclists, horses or wildlife.
This summer, enjoy the sport, support your team, and celebrate safely – but if you’re driving, make it 0%.
There are strict penalties if you are convicted of drink driving, including:
- a minimum 12 month driving ban
- a criminal record
- an unlimited fine
- up to 6 months in prison
- an endorsement on your licence for 11 years
